Hosting and SEO: pay attention to this

Do you want to rank higher in Google? Then you have to make sure that your content and your website are in tip-top shape. But in addition, the choice of the right hosting company and subscription also has a major influence on your findability in search engines. This is why SEO and hosting have more to do with each other than you think.

It may not be so obvious, but your web host has a major influence on how you rank in search engines. Especially if you have already done everything else for good findability. After all, SEO is a game of centimeters. The smallest 'profit' can make the difference between a spot on the first or second search page. And with that between many or hardly any visitors.

SEO hosting? These are the factors

In short, a hosting company affects the SEO of your website:

1. Snelheid

The speed of your website largely depends on the hosting. After all, they own and manage the servers that serve the web page to your visitors. That speed is crucial for a good score in search engines. They have a strong preference for fast websites. They don't want to redirect visitors to slow web pages.

2. Uptime

Check your current hoster

Would you like to critically examine your hosting company on these matters? Then use independent measurement tools. This is how you can use the service Pingdom measure the uptime of your website. A good tool for mapping your website speed is Google Pagespeed Insights. This measures, among other things, the response time of the server, or the time between a request from your website visitor and a server response. This factor gives a good indication of the speed of your hosting package.

1. Choose the right subscription

Hosters offer VPSs in all shapes and sizes. Often the following applies: the faster, the more expensive the subscription. For websites with relatively little traffic, there is a limit to the usefulness of extra capacity and computing power. When choosing, take into account, for example, your visitor numbers and the 'weight' of your website.

2. Make use of 'booster functions'

Most hosting companies offer resources to speed up your website, whether or not for a (small) additional cost. For example, consider caching. They also often offer automatic settings for your CMS system that increase the speed. Not all functions offer the same added value for all websites. Often the only way is simply by trying them. Above all, do that.

3. Deploy a Content Delivery Network

Do you have a website with many multimedia elements and/or many visitors? Then a Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a good option. Images and videos are placed on a network of lightning-fast servers. These are geographically spread all over the world. Depending on the location of your visitor, this network automatically switches the closest server to display this content.

Do you use an international hosting party? Then you can sometimes use their own CDN. Local hosting companies generally do not have a CDN. They often offer functions to easily connect your website to it. Use it if necessary.

Switching providers: 3 points of attention

Are you dissatisfied with the SEO performance of your current hosting plan? Then it may be worth migrating your website. Keep the following things in mind:

1. Learn about the market

Choosing a good SEO hosting simply starts with good market research. List various options and read reviews, for example. Some hosting companies claim to offer “SEO-friendly hosting”. A nice claim, but check carefully what this means in practice.

2. Compare Uptime Percentage

3. Look for help and facilities in case of malfunctions

Is your website malfunctioning due to, for example, a cyber attack or technical defect in your website? Then it is important that you are up and running again as soon as possible. And not just for SEO, of course. An easily accessible helpdesk and things like good backup and restore facilities help with this.
